Girl$ (2010)

Similar to the issues raised in Japanese film My Rainy Days starring Nozomi Sasaki, Kenneth Bi\'s Girl$ tackles teenage prostitution in Hong Kong which proliferated with the internet chat rooms, affording materialistic girls to live a lifestyle of luxury if they decide to trade their bodies for it. But unlike its Japanese counterpart, this one is without the fairy tale romance, and rooted itself to the common issues that girls in the trade face, much like what Herman Yau tackled in his Whispers and Moans (which got credited with a direct reference), only with a lot more grit, gloom and in more laissez-faire structure. Think of it like a companion piece to Yau\'s film, only that it involves teenagers and outside of the brothel/karaoke system..

Jin follows the police to the suspect's home, not wholly understanding the phenomenon that he's part of but curious enough to see it through. When confronted by the police in the early hours of the night, Ran denies hit-and-run accusation since she was asleep the entire night. Jing steps in and tells the party that he should be the one being arrested since he was the driver of the accident in his dream, which happened exactly the same way as the real-life counterpart. The police dismisses Jin as a nut and arrests Ran. Sorting through unexplainable paradox, Jin and Ran discover a strange connection between the two; when Jin dreams, Ran unconsciously acts out his dream while sleepwalking - essentially, the two become one.

Monga (2010)

Monga sputters a bit when it enters its third act. Some narrative points are predictable and labored, and the film runs a bit too long at two hours plus. Still, by the time Monga trends towards convention, the film has earned the goodwill to satisfy and even impress. The Wanhua District setting helps; the storied location is home to Taipei's oldest temple, possesses numerous bustling night markets, and was formerly the city's red light district. Monga gives the district a distinct personality, making it the perfect cultural backdrop for these familiar characters and their well-worn struggles. Honor, friendship, family, loyalty and brotherhood – these themes are incredibly common for this genre, but Monga allows them the appearance of freshness. Perhaps after the third or fourth iteration of this new style Taiwan gangster film, Monga won't impress as greatly. Right now, however, Monga sharply and entertainingly gives audiences something that feels like a discovery. It's a pretty good feeling. (Kozo 2010)
